We have created a buyer's guide covering what you need to know when selecting a fast pitch softball bat. Then, we have included the ten best fastpitch softball bat reviews to help you choose a bat. However, always check the latest regulations for the league your child is joining.

Baseball, Softball, Fastpitch Softball, and Slowpitch Softball, What Is the Difference?

This is going to get a bit specific, so feel free to move on if you are past the basics...

In baseball, pitchers are standing on a mound and can pitch overhand, underhand, or sidearm. In Little League Baseball, the pitcher is 46 feet from the batter, the bases are 60 feet apart, and the outfield is 200 to 275 feet from home plate. Bases are 90 feet apart in more advanced play. Baseballs are between 9 and 9.25 inches and weigh between 5 and 5.25 ounces. In baseball, pitches can measure between 80 to 95 miles per hour. Baseball bats are usually a maximum of 34 inches in length but can go up to 42 inches. Baseball bats can have a barrel measuring from 2 1/4" to 2 5/8" with varying drop weights for younger players, but only a -3 drop weight for older players.

Contrary to what many believe, softball is not just for girls! In softball, which is a faster-paced game, pitchers are level with batters and can only pitch underhanded. There are only seven innings in softball, and in the event of a tie, only one more inning is played with a runner from the offensive team placed on second base.

In fastpitch softball, the pitcher is closer to the batter than in baseball, either 35 or 40 feet. The baseball diamond is also smaller in fastpitch softball. The bases are 55 or 60 feet apart, and the outfield is 150 or 225 to 250 feet from home plate. Measuring between 11.88 and 12.13 inches and weighing between 6.25 and 7 ounces, a softball is larger and heavier than a baseball. Softball bats have a maximum length of 34", a maximum drop weight of -12, and a maximum barrel size of 2 1/4". In fastpitch softball, the pitcher winds up their pitching arm before releasing the ball underhanded, creating pitching speeds of over 50 to 60 miles per hour. Bunting is allowed in fastpitch softball. Bunting is holding the bat stationary and letting the ball connect with the bat without swinging. Also, in fastpitch softball, runners can stand several feet from the base in hopes of stealing a base.

In slowpitch softball, there is no wind up before pitching, so the pitch and the game is slower than fastpitch softball. In slowpitch baseball, pitches are around 25 miles per hour. Bunting is not allowed in slowpitch softball, and players must stay on the base until a pitch has crossed home plate.

What length bat should my child use?

A quick guideline would be that children under 60 pounds can use a bat that is 26 to 29 inches long, and those over 70 pounds can use a bag that is 28 to 33 inches long. Charts are available online and at sporting goods stores that make recommendations based on height and weight.

Here are some guidelines based on age.

  • For 7 year olds, try bats between 24" to 26" with a -10 to -13.5 drop weight.
  • For 8 to 9 year olds, try bats between 26" to 29" with a -10 to -13.5 drop weight
  • For 10 to 11 year olds, try bats between 28" to 31" with a -8 to -13 drop weight.
  • For 12 to 13 year olds, try bats between 29" to 33" with a -8 to -12 drop weight
  • For those over 14 years old, try bats between 31" to 34" with a -8 to -10 drop weight

To get a better calculation, start by figuring that a 26" bat is a good length for a child between 3'and 3' 4" tall in cleats. Then, for every 4" to 5" taller, add an inch to the length of the bat, but never increase a bat more one inch at a time to avoid changing a child's swing.

You can also check the length of a bat by standing it next to your child or having them grab it in front or out to the side of them. A bat standing beside your child should only come up to their hip. With their hands out to their sides, a child should be able to grip the end of a bat with their palm when the handle of the bat is at the center of their chest. With their hands out in front of them, a child should be able to grasp the barrel of the bat if the base is against their chest

How do I determine the right weight bat for my child?

Bat weights are compared by drop weights. The drop weight is the actual weight in ounces of the bat subtracted from the bat's length. A 26" bat that weighs 18 ounces has a drop weight of -8. The best way to determine a good bat weight for a child is to let them try several bats. A shorter child may require a shorter bat than a taller child, but the shorter child may be stronger and able to handle a heavily bat. Some of this is personal preference, but in fastpitch softball, a lighter bat that helps create a quicker swing can be very important. A heavier bat will create a more powerful swing.

The other element of bat weight is the swing weight. The swing weight of a bat is affected by the balance of the weight in a bat. If a bat has most of its weight at the end away from the handle, then it will feel heavier when it is swung. The swing can be slower but more powerful. If the weight is at the handle, then, the bat will feel lighter and faster, which can be important in fastpitch softball.

What is the best material for youth softball bats?

Fastpitch softball bats are made out of alloy, composite, hybrid, and wood. Alloy bats are one-piece bats made from aluminum or aluminum and other metals for strength. This creates a thinner, more reactive barrel. The one-piece construction provides a stronger, stiffer bat for less flexing and more powerful hitting. Alloy bats can be used at any temperature and don't have to be broken in. However, they create the most vibration in a batter's hands and have the smallest sweet spot. The sweet spot in a bat is an area that reduces the vibration a batter feels and creates more powerful hits by maximizing the speed of the batted ball. It is five to seven inches from the end of the bat

Composite bats are made from carbon fiber, fiberglass, graphite, and Kevlar. They provide the largest sweet spot. However, they cannot be used below 65° Fahrenheit and require 150 to 200 hits to break in.

Hybrid bats use two-piece construction bonding a lighter composite handle to an alloy barrel, allowing the barrel to be longer. They have a smaller sweet spot. However, they reduce vibration, can be used at any temperature, and do not need to be broken in. The two-piece construction makes the bat more flexible, reducing vibration in the handle and creating a trampoline effect with the batted ball off the barrel.

Wood bats are usually only used by professional players and only in practice if at all by younger players. They are heavier, have a smaller sweet spot, and do not provide as much speed to a batted ball. However, practicing with a wood bat can help you develop a shorter, quicker swing; will make you more selective with pitches you attempt to hit; and will make an aluminum bat feel lighter, creating a faster swing.
