Daily DraftKings Picks: Tuesday, Aug 12

Yesterday was so frustrating! My one concern with starting Shelby Miller was Giancarlo Stanton homering — he did it twice — and my original Official Lineup included Robinson Cano, Chris Carter, and Travis Snider, who combined for four homers. And make no mistake, I wasn’t going to add those players at the expense of the guys in my lineup who did well. Nope. I was going to have Cano, Carter, Snider, Jones, Polanco, Santana, Harrison, and King Felix. Ugh!

Still 117.20 points was respectable. It broke even on the day, winning most of my double-ups but falling short in GPPs.

My three hidden players were Adam Jones (19.00 points), Carlos Beltran (9.00 points), and Felix Hernandez (31.95 points).

Tuesday looks like a troublesome day for weather with a 70% chance of precipitation (or higher) in several games: NYY@BAL, ARI@CLE, DET@PIT, and WAS@NYM. I’m going to do my best to avoid picking pitchers in these games, but blocking off eight starters so early in the day is tough so Tuesday’s Official Lineup could see some changes between 5:00 pm EST and the 7:05 pm EST contest start time.

Tuesday’s Official DraftKings Lineup

Note: Lineup subject to change due to weather and released MLB lineups. Check back before contest lineups lock for our final lineup.

  • C: Yan Gomes (CLE) vs. J. Collmenter (ARI) — $4,000
  • 1B: Albert Pujols (LAA) vs. J. Williams (PHI) — $4,400
  • 2B: Jason Kipnis (CLE) vs. J. Collmenter (ARI) — $4,400
  • 3B: Hidden
  • SS: Hidden
  • OF: Mike Trout (LAA) vs. J. Williams (PHI) — $5,400
  • OF: Kole Calhoun (LAA) vs. J. Williams (PHI) — $3,400
  • OF: Matt Kemp (LAD) @ M. Minor (ATL) — $4,700
  • SP: Collin McHugh (HOU) vs. Y. Pino (MIN) — $8,700
  • SP: Hidden

I like Doug Fister against the Mets for $8,400, but weather threatens that game so I’ll build my lineup around McHugh at a similar price. McHugh draws the Josh Willingham-less Twins, who’re also missing Trevor Plouffe, and should have a fairly easy go of it against a team that pretty much goes as far Danny Santana takes them.

Last time out Jerome Williams allowed 10 ER to the Indians and I didn’t own a large enough part of it. I’m still not super-stacking here, but I’m definitely getting the top of the Angels lineup in there. That means Calhoun, Trout, and Pujols are in today’s lineup, and I’m still toying with Josh Hamilton (but I like Kemp a lot — more below). Plus who knows, my hidden 3B and SS could be David Freese and/or Erick Aybar!

The Indians crush RHP and Josh Collmenter is a susceptible fly ball pitcher with a low strikeout rate. In other words, you can exploit him. Unfortunately, I’ve either selected or stacked against Collmenter about four times this year and I’m 0-for-each time; when I pick him as my pitcher he sucks and when I stack against him he’s great, so you’ve been warned. Kipnis has underwhelmed as he’s supposed to provide a ton of HR and SB but hasn’t done much of either. Still, he’s had a nice string of multi-hit games recently and if the Indians do anything, he usually scores some runs. I almost picked John Jaso at catcher for $3,100 but I had some extra cash so I upgraded to Gomes, who’s out together a consistently solid season. In his last 10 games, Gomes’ OPS is over 1.000.

And then there’s Kemp. This one is simple: He’ll face Mike Minor, who looks terrible, he crushes lefties, and he’s still tearing the cover off the ball (for the most part). I’m not overthinking this one, like I did yesterday!

It didn’t help that Vargas struck out twice, once with bases loaded, no outs! :(
I went with him as a cheaper alternative to Freeman yesterday.
