Buy or Sell: Jose Bautista’s Hot Bat

In our second week of our buy low/sell high series I focus on two players that probably went undrafted in many leagues. Brett Myers has been a waiver wire gem this season and just earned himself a two-year contract extension while Jose Bautista has been the league’s best power hitter in a down year for the home run. Let’s take a closer look:

Brett Myers (SP) Houston Astros

Why I’m Buying: Did you know that Brett Myers has lasted at least six innings in each of his 21 starts this season? Oh, and he also is pitching lights out in July with a 1.67 ERA and 0.74 WHIP in five starts, including a complete game, 12-strikeout performance last time out. All of this and Myers is still available in 58 percent of Yahoo! leagues, but there’s no reason to believe he won’t keep this up the rest of the season. Myers has improved his walk rate slightly, but the biggest difference this year is his ability to keep the ball in the ballpark. Myers has allowed 0.74 home runs per nine innings, which is a huge improvement on his 2.29 mark from last season. It could be the new home ballpark (0.38 HR/9 at home), but Myers has proved that he is worthy of a roster spot in any league format.

Jose Bautista (3B, OF) Toronto Blue Jays

Why I’m Selling: In a season where the home run is lacking, Jose Bautista just keeps ‘em coming, so you might be surprised to see him as a sell-high option. While Bautista’s home runs are a valuable asset, he is one of the game’s streakiest hitters and could go into a cold spell at any moment. Consider that in April and June Bautista batted .196 with eight home runs and 25 RBI, but in May and July he batted .318 with 23 home runs and 54 RBI. While you might be getting top-10 value right now, it could go south quickly so it would be wise to sell him while he’s hot.
