Don’t look now, but Jon Lester‘s ERA is back under 4.00 and, along with Clay Buchholz, is breathing life back into a beleaguered Boston rotation.
After getting roughed up for seven earned runs against Tampa Bay back on April 18, Lester has made three starts against Baltimore, Toronto and the Los Angeles Angels. While they aren’t quite the behemoths that the other AL East opponents have proven to be, fantasy owners will take anything at this point.
In his last three outings, Lester has gone 20.2 innings allowing just one earned run and only 10 hits. The eight walks continue to be an issue, but the most telling sign of Lester’s improvement is the increase in ground balls he’s seen.
Over his first three starts Lester induced just 28 ground balls versus 27 fly balls. During his recent stretch – also three starts – he’s induced 31 ground balls versus only 11 fly balls.
