I told you so.
Ok, so maybe you weren’t one of the people who suggested the Red Sox were going to struggle offensively, and maybe it was just one game, but it was still nine runs against C.C. Sabathia and the Yankees’ bullpen.
New York jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Boston rallied by scoring eight runs in their final 10 outs to take game one of the 18-game season series.
But enough of the game recap. Baseball Professor is a fantasy baseball site, so what can we take from this game?
- True to his first-half form, Sabathia struggled. He allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings while striking out four, but he was still better than Josh Beckett. Despite the rotation upgrades for both clubs, the starters figure to struggle anytime these team’s face off, and Opening Day was a perfect example.
- Boston’s new bats shined as Adrian Beltre, Mike Cameron, and Marco Scutaro combined to go 5-for-9 with two runs scored and three RBI. For New York, Curtis Granderson homered and Nick Johnson walked twice. It’s only one game, but these guys showed in this game what they can do for you all season. Expect more performances like these from all five newcomers.
- Jonathan Papelbon found the strike zone with 7-of-10 pitches and allowed only one inconsequential single to Jorge Posada. Considering his trouble locating his pitches last season, this is an encouraging sign. Even if he had struggled though, Papelbon’s performance isn’t really anything to worry about.
- Speaking of Posada, the Yankees’ catcher homered in his first at-bat of the season and went 3-for-4 on the night. He continues to be a great value add at catcher as fantasy owners continue to worry about his health. It is a concern, but when Posada is on the field he produces.
