Let’s kick off the work week with some fantasy headlines on this Monday, March 22:
- Nolan Reimold snapped an 0-for-22 streak by collecting his first hit of the spring.
- Daisuke Matuszaka got his first work of the spring in an intrasquad game. Not surprisingly (since it’s March 22), Matsuzaka will likely start the season on the DL.
- Updating a headline from yesterday, Bobby Jenks says he’ll be ready to start the season after an MRI revealed only a minor calf strain.
- After an electric start to his career, Reds’ righty Edinson Volquez has been sidelined after major elbow surgery. He is expected to return in August.
- Last Thursday we reported that Lance Berkman hoped to be ready by Opening Day. After having his knee drained on Sunday, “he doesn’t appear close to returning.”
- Tommy Manzella, another ailing Astro, will be out seven to 10 days with a strained right quadriceps.
- Joe Nathan will undergo Tommy John surgery.
- Yankees top catching prospect Jesus Montero will start the season at Triple-A.
- The Phillies will soon decide between Jamie Moyer and Kyle Kendrick for the team’s fifth rotation spot.
- After dealing with post-concussion syndrome in 2008, Ryan Church thinks he is finally back on track in Pittsburgh.
- Good news for Padres owners; under Dave Roberts, the team is going to be aggressive on the base paths this year.
- The Mariners unveiled their new-look lineup with Casey Kotchman batting third where manager Don Wakamatsu expects him to succeed.
- After news broke that J.P. Howell will miss a month, Rays manager Joe Maddon announced that the Rays’ fifth starter battle between Wade Davis and Andy Sonnanstine will be resolved sooner than expected. On a related note, Davis was rocked Sunday, allowing nine hits in two innings to Minnesota.
- Brandon Morrow, one of Toronto’s newest additions, received good news regarding his shoulder on Sunday.
