Spot on comments. BJ has made questionable statements and bush league plays going back to his days in the minors (DUI, BJ, Delmon Young, and Elijah Dukes bitching abt. the minors, doesn't hustle and isn't subtle in his contempt of the Rays). The Rays were smart to get rid of DY and ED and if BJ hadn't wet the bed last year I think he'd be gone. Two words for BJ... Desmond Jennings...I believe BJ has all the tools to be great once he gets his head out his a$$. The rays won arbitration and I think BJ is aware that the team is very comfortable with Jennings so BJ will be playing for his future, not to mention his little brother is outplaying him as well.

If what you say is true, it could explain much of Upton's struggles. Everyone thinks he has the talent to succeed, but it sounds to me like he has some maturity issues he needs to work out, and until he does I won't touch him with a ten foot pole. Thanks FenwayPunk.

I would like to offer an insider's perspective on Bossman Junior. First, last year the kid had absolutely NO offseason. His offseason was spent nursing a surgically repaired shoulder, and by the time he was cleared to play he immediatley went to lead-off for the Rays. Second, BJ Upton HATES Tampa. I have spent ample time with him in some bars in SOHO district (yes, seriously) and the young man certainly has a "too big for his britches" mentality. The kind of stuff we talked about included how he prefers away games to home, how he wishes fans would come to the home games, and how tampa doesn't have the nightlife or hometown interest that say, Chicago, LA, Boston, Philly, NY has.
The kid is a fierce competitor who was rushed into the bigs WAAAAY to early to play SS for the DEVIL Rays at age 19. Think about that. Your 19 and your asked to play the hardest position there is in baseball. Success isn't exactly tied into that scenario.
In case you didn't know, BJ is currently being a pain in the ass over his arbitration situation. The Rays have firmly said they won't go over 3 million, and BJ isn't budging from his stance of wanting 3.3 million. That isn't exactly a relationship builder with a franchise. I firmly believe that Rays will be looking to deal BJ much sooner than the general public realizes, and BJ is well aware of this fact since it's EXACTLY what he wants. For this reason, you're going to see a MONSTER year out of BJ Upton, the kind that will make you look back at the comparison to the dread pirate McCutchen in disbelief. Ya heard it hear first boys.
Keep up the good work
